Coach David Flavius

David hails from the island of St. Lucia located in the eastern Carribean Sea. Soccer is a part of the St. Lucia culture and David excelled as he progressed through the ranks eventually playing for the St. Lucia national team. He came to the United States in the 1990’s to attend university and his soccer career continued to grow. Eventually he found his way to Pittsburgh to play for the Pittsburgh Riverhounds where he finished his playing career. While in Pittsburgh he has coached for multiple clubs and schools – often helping out by stepping in when a school or club was in urgent need of a coach. He has been looking for the right place to spend more of his time and our hope is that maybe that could be the Sentinels.

As a coach, David clearly focuses on technical skill development. He will often talk about how American players need to spend more time focusing on foot skills. He is an avid proponent of Futsal as indoor development tool to help players to become more decisive with the ball. When you watch David play, it becomes clear that his exquisite ball control affords him the luxury of being creative which leads to opportunities happening on the field. David’s scoring records as a forward demonstrate how critical foot skills are on the field.

When you watch David coach the common refrain from parents is the infectiousness of his love for the game. Soccer has been David’s life and he passes his love for the game through all the enthusiasm he brings to field. At end of a training session it sometimes hard to determine who worked harder – David or the players!

We are fortunate and thankful to have such a skilled player modeling to our youth the necessary skills to become a highly effective soccer player. Soccer is not a part of the American culture as it is in St. Lucia. Our kids don’t get many opportunities to see the game played at the fastest, most skilled levels but when they work with David that starts to change.
